What a SAR lesson looks like

Every SAR instructor teaches the same structured syllabus, so you get the same standard whoever you're matched with — and your progress is written down after every drive.

A syllabus, not random drives

53 topics from the cockpit drill and moving off, through junctions, mini and multi-lane roundabouts, meeting traffic and manoeuvres, to independent driving by sat-nav and signs. Nothing is left to chance before your test.

Progress you can see

Your instructor rates each topic after every lesson in your printed progress logbook and in your instructor's SAR app, so you know exactly what's covered, what needs work and when you're ready to book a test.

Local roads, explained

Most SAR pupils sit their test at Bletchley. Our instructors teach the roads around it every week — and have filmed the trickiest ones so you can watch before you drive them.

Not sure where to start?

Never driven?

Most beginners choose automatic. If you want the flexibility of a manual licence, manual it is — either way your first lesson is an assessment of where you are.

Had lessons before?

Tell us roughly how many hours and what you found hard. Your instructor picks up from there rather than starting again.

Test already booked?

Say so in your request. We'll prioritise matching you with an instructor who has time before your date, and can talk through test car hire.

Ready to find your instructor?

Tell us your postcode, manual or automatic and when you're free. A DVSA-approved SAR instructor gets in touch — usually the same day.
