Roman Roundabout — straight ahead to the IKEA roundabout (left lane)
Going straight ahead from the Roman Roundabout towards the IKEA roundabout using the left-hand lane. This part covers reading the give-way line, waiting for a natural gap and holding good lane discipline all the way round.
The layout
The Roman Roundabout sits on the A5 side of Bletchley and links the town to the IKEA roundabout and Central Milton Keynes. Approaching from Bletchley, both the left and the middle lane are marked for straight ahead, so you have a choice. In this part we use the left lane.
What to plan for
- Priority at the give-way line goes to traffic coming from your right — look early and keep looking, because the roundabout is wide and vehicles arrive quickly.
- Don't rush it. Take your time and wait for a real gap rather than forcing one.
- Watch for a 'blocker' — a vehicle on your right that is about to pass you while the traffic behind it has stopped or is being held. That is often the safest moment to enter.
- Once you are on, keep close to the kerb on your left and stay in the outer lane all the way round.
Where learners lose marks
Drifting from the left lane into the middle lane part-way round is the common fault here. It forces the driver beside you to slow down and can be marked as a lane-discipline or positioning fault. Keeping tight to the left kerb prevents it.
Remember
Road layouts and markings change. Always drive to what you can see on the day, follow the signs and markings in front of you and give way where the road requires it.
