Roman Roundabout — turning right for Old Bletchley and Central Bletchley
The examiner may ask you to turn right or to follow the signs for Old Bletchley or Central Bletchley. Use the right lane, hug the centre island, and finish in the overtaking lane before moving back to the left — this is the most common place learners pick up a fault on the Roman.
The layout
For a right turn here we use the right-hand lane, just as the road markings show. The middle lane does also head right, but the markings are poor and it is a narrow space within the roundabout, so it is best to keep to the right lane on this occasion.
What to plan for
- Give priority to traffic already on the roundabout before you enter.
- As you enter, get yourself over to the centre island and hug it round. Remember to hug the roundabout the whole way.
- There is a second give-way — give priority to the right again.
Where learners lose marks
This is the most common place learners pick up faults on the Roman Roundabout. Because we use the right lane to turn right, we must finish in the overtaking lane, by the fence. If we finish in the left lane we cross the path of the vehicle on our left. The safest way is to finish on the right, then mirrors, signal, and move back into the left lane once you are clear of the roundabout.
Remember
Right lane in, overtaking lane out, then a proper mirror–signal–manoeuvre lane change back to the left. Don't cut across on the exit.
